What is a data breach?

A data breach means personal data that you are responsible for has been disclosed to someone who shouldn’t have it, or lost, stolen, accidentally destroyed or damaged.

Personal data is information about who someone is, where they live, telephone number, what they do, photographs, ethnicity, gender, health or financial details - things that identify a person, even if it doesn’t include their name.

This may include your employees, customers, volunteers or service users, or anyone else whose personal data you hold or use.
